Optiva is a software company headquartered near Toronto, Ontario, providing OSS/BSS (operations and business support systems) software and services to the telecommunications industry. In addition to becoming a Google Cloud Technology Partner in 2018, Optiva had also recently migrated many of its core services to the Google Cloud Platform with the aim of improving customer experience & scalability for mission-critical applications such as their Optiva Charging Engine, which powers billing systems.
However, as is the case with many federally-regulated organizations, both in Canada and globally, several of Optiva’s clients were prevented from adopting a public cloud-first approach due to regulatory and compliance requirements. In Canada, one such federal law will affect an organization’s public cloud strategy is PIPEDA (the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act). PIPEDA can limit the ability of an organization to utilize a cloud-first approach if the cloud provider’s data centres are located outside of either Canada or the province in which the organization operates.
Arctiq, a Google Cloud Premier Partner, was introduced to the Google Cloud Kubernetes Product Management team at Google Next 2018, and was selected as a global design partner to work with Google Cloud Engineers on a breakthrough product that would allow organizations to utilize a hybrid cloud approach to their business acceleration transformation efforts.
Arctiq places heavy focus on developing proven, scalable, reference architectures. This is to ensure their customers are starting from a solid foundation that will evolve and scale as their business and technical requirements evolve. After many months of collaboration, documentation, and revision, the product previously known as “Cloud Services Platform” was publicly announced to be in Beta and quickly nearing GA release with a new name: Anthos.
Arctiq and Google Cloud were seeking an innovative customer willing to adopt Anthos Beta and present the use case onstage in a sold out session at Google Next 2019 — and with Optiva’s commitment to innovation as both a Google Cloud Technology Partner as well as client with a compelling use case, they were an ideal fit for the opportunity.
With Google Next 2019 rapidly approaching, Arctiq, Google Cloud, and Optiva faced timeline constraints of only five weeks to design and implement Anthos–including onboarding the application, performance testing, and node scaling. Geographical constraints added a layer of complexity and required that the teams would be working remotely and collaborating over Hangouts, Drive and Slack.
Implementing Anthos allows Optiva to provide more choice and options to its customer base by enabling the target application to be deployed on-premise at customer environments and data centres. This ensures a common experience across services like GKE and GKEOP, as well as negates the use of other on-premise container orchestration stacks. The customer can also utilize their existing on-prem hardware; no need to acquire new infrastructure assets.
Anthos also enables Optiva to leverage their existing GCP services, thereby building on the investments that the organization had already made into Google Cloud, and leveraging connection points and integrations that exist within the Google Cloud Platform. This approach also allowed Optiva to support a consistent environment spanning cloud and customer on-premise environments, and making software currency, testing, and upgrade much more seamless.
As a result of the implementation, Optiva can also offer a more flexible architecture to its clients, enabling a potentially seamless disaster recovery process. In cases where clients are leveraging a GKEOP cluster, Optiva can offer the ability to sync data into Google Spanner services and provider Disaster Recovery environments on demand. This enables the client to not need to maintain a second data centre and instead rely on Google Cloud Platform as that recovery point.
In the end, Anthos has enabled both Optiva and its clients more options, flexibility and a consistent experience across GCP public cloud and local on-premise deployments—as well as cost savings. In their own announcement of the successful implementation of Anthos, Optiva asserts that, “The move to the public cloud and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) offers telcos total cost of ownership (TCO) savings of up to 80%.”
